The Somali language survived through the Kushite empire and made its way to the Horn were it was established as the language of the natives. P.S. Unless a Somali was taught Arabic in school growing up, then they won't know it. My moms learned Egyptian Arabic as a child and is still fluent to this day but speaks to me in Somali and English daily.
